Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi celebrates Zanzibar FC’s expansion to 10 teams.

Due to the overwhelming number applicants for the hotly anticipated 2013/2014 ZFC season, the league has been expanded to 10 teams.

The original 96 spots were filled up in a record breaking 2 hours and 44 minutes and the application forms kept on coming in.

With the expansion there will now be 120 players taking part in the new season and therefore the 10 team captains will have a lot of research to do before this weekend’s draft.

To accommodate the extra teams the games will now take place between 7:30pm and 12:30am on Saturday nights, with kick-offs at 7:30pm, 8:30pm, 9:30pm, 10:30pm and 11:30pm.

The league format will stay the same, a double round-robin with each team playing each team twice for a total of 18 league games to decide the league champions.

For the first time ever in Zanzibar FC history there will be no automatic qualification to the play-offs. The top 8 teams will qualify for the play-off quarter-finals leaving the bottom two teams to dwell upon what could have been.

The draft will take place this weekend and the squads and fixtures will be published early next week.

The league is scheduled to start on Saturday, 5th October.
